The Power of In-Person Moments in a Digital Age

O Poder do Presencial numa era Digital

In this digital era, where online interactions dominate—particularly in sectors like information technology and systems—there is an increasing need, especially with the anticipated impact of AI tools, to seize every opportunity for in-person meetings and follow-ups.

The remarkable capacity we’ve developed since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 to connect virtually is fascinating. This shift has enabled global business expansion on an unprecedented scale. In Portugal, for example, we’ve seen significant growth in the IT nearshore industry, allowing our employees the flexibility to work remotely. This flexibility has made it easier for them to balance professional goals with personal and family responsibilities.

However, alongside these advancements, we’ve also witnessed a rise in issues such as isolation, burnout, and the absence of casual, yet crucial, face-to-face interactions like coffee chats and in-person feedback sessions. These informal encounters, where we can better read body language, have become rarer. As a result, relationships and decisions have become more volatile, often relying more on digital perceptions—like those formed during a Teams meeting—than on direct, face-to-face communication. This volatility affects both company operations and client relations.

In-person interactions play a fundamental role in developing and strengthening human connections. They offer a depth and quality of connection that is often unattainable through digital means. Let’s explore how these face-to-face moments positively impact professional relationships.

1. Non-Verbal Communication

In-person communication allows for the use of body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice—all essential elements for effective and empathetic communication. These non-verbal cues help convey emotions and intentions more clearly, reducing misunderstandings and bringing together all stakeholders within a company, from clients and managers to consultants and candidates.

2. Personal and Professional Development

Face-to-face interactions are ideal for mentoring, where proximity can enhance learning and personal growth. Additionally, the opportunity to give and receive immediate feedback in person is crucial for the continuous development of a company’s employees, particularly younger members.

3. Empathy and Emotional Connection

Physical presence creates opportunities for deeper emotional connections. When we are physically present, we can feel and respond to others’ emotions more authentically, fostering empathy and mutual understanding.

4. Trust and Relationship Building

Being physically present helps build trust—a cornerstone of any professional relationship. In-person meetings allow for the establishment of credibility and decision-making confidence. The frequency and quality of these meetings can strengthen bonds and solidify trust. Once this trust is established, alternating between in-person and digital interactions becomes more seamless without compromising operations.

5. Shared Lifetime Experiences

Face-to-face interactions often result in shared, memorable experiences that serve as the foundation of a relationship. These common experiences foster a sense of shared identity, reinforce corporate culture, and strengthen connections between people.

6. Conflict Resolution

Physical presence can facilitate conflict resolution by enabling clearer, more authentic, and direct communication. The nuances of in-person conversations help dissipate tensions and find solutions more quickly than virtual interactions can. Quicker conflict resolution positively impacts the business.

7. Full Attention

In-person interactions tend to command full attention, free from the distractions common in digital environments. This concentrated attention fosters a sense of value and mutual respect, translating into increased trust—a key driver of better business outcomes.

8. Culture and Context

Face-to-face interactions provide immersion in different cultures and contexts, offering a deeper, more comprehensive understanding. This is especially important in multicultural environments, where cultural context can influence the perception and interpretation of messages, and in environments with dynamic, collaborative interactions.

Importance in the Digital Age

Despite technological advancements that facilitate digital communication and collaboration, the power of in-person interactions remains irreplaceable in professional relationships. These interactions complement digital communication by adding an additional dimension of connection that strengthens personal and professional bonds.

As the world increasingly relies on AI tools for tasks that can be easily automated, the importance of cultivating face-to-face professional relationships has never been greater. Developing the skills associated with relationship management—whether in leadership or commercial team management—will be essential as we move forward.

In conclusion, in-person interactions and physical presence enrich human connections, providing the emotional and communicative depth necessary for developing strong, lasting relationships. By valuing these moments, we can cultivate more meaningful and fulfilling professional relationships.

As a wise Italian saying goes, “We’re not friends until we share a meal together.”

The real magic happens when people come together—when they shake hands, look each other in the eye, feel each other’s energy, and build extraordinary relationships that drive extraordinary, long-term results in any company striving for greatness.
